A cornice is a term used to define an area or region that hangs over something else. It’s the topmost horizontal portion that extends over the top of a wall or beneath the roof line. The topmost section of the entablature, the cornice is a common feature of ancient Greek and Roman architecture.

A cornice is a horizontal decorative moulding that crowns a building or furniture piece, such as the cornice over a door or window, along the top edge of a pedestal, or along the top of an interior wall.

A basic cornice, such as crown moulding atop an interior wall or above kitchen cabinets or a bookcase, can be made simply with a crown.

The purpose of a building’s protruding cornice material is to divert rainwater away from the structure’s walls. This role is fulfilled in residential construction by projecting gable ends, roof eaves, and gutters. House eaves, on the other hand, may be referred to as “cornices” if they are finished with ornate moulding. While most cornices are also eaves (overhanging the building’s sides), not all eaves are traditionally termed cornices. Cornices have a decorative feature, whereas eaves are largely functional and not always ornamental.

The projecting cornice of a building may appear to be heavy and thus in danger of toppling, especially on commercial buildings, yet it is often relatively light, made of pressed metal.

The cornice material is traditionally made up of the following elements:

Cyma – A double-curvature moulding, sometimes known as a ‘wave moulding.’ As the topmost element, it is used. It can be either a cyma recta (upper concave curve and lower concex curve) or a cyma reversa (upper concave curve and lower concex curve) (upper convex curve and lower concave curve).

A component with a vertical face and a horizontal soffit is known as a corona.

Under the projecting cornice, there is a moulding called bed-moulding.

The cornice’s primary purpose is to protect the structure’s walls by diverting rainfall away from the structure, but it also serves as an aesthetic element.
