A cutting disc is a specialized, often hand-held power instrument that is used to cut hard materials such as ceramic tile, metal, concrete, and stone. With the exception of the cutting disc, this tool is quite similar to an angle grinder, chop saw, or even a die grinder (a circular diamond blade, or resin-bonded abrasive cutting wheel for a disc cutter vs. an abrasive grinding wheel for an angle grinder).

When compared to hand tools, this equipment is extremely effective at cutting extremely hard materials.

A hand-held grinder with a cutting wheel is required for many manual cutting jobs. One of the most prevalent applications for cutting wheels is metal manufacturing.

Cutting sheet metal, sizing metal stock for welding, re-welding a weld, and cutting and notching steel pipe are just a few applications. Cutting discs are also commonly used with die grinders and chop saws.

Smaller tasks and more precise cuts may necessitate the use of a die grinder with a cutting wheel. These cutting wheels or discs are very thin, with a diameter of less than 2 inches. They’re usually constructed of metal and have a diamond-coated edge as the abrasive because they’re so thin.

Sheet metal, as well as lightweight or thin materials, benefit from this sort of cutting disc. A larger disc cutter is required for thicker or heavier materials.

A basic Circular Saw with a 7 1/4 inch cutting wheel is used for lengthy straight cuts on sheet metal or light cut-off work. These cutting discs are made of resin bonded abrasive material or metal with a diamond-coated edge, similar to the smaller wheels on an angle grinder.
